The JCR Website

Ian Bergson wrote the original (we think, anyway) JCR website back in 2006, which served well for many years.  The 2010 Commitee decided to redo the site because the old one showing its age, and wasn't really maintainable because it was written in the outdated language ASP, which meant that new features couldn't be added as no-one knew the language, and finding value-for-money hosting wasn't easy.  So over the next year and a half a dedicated team worked on the new site, which you see now, which was finally approaching completion at the beginning of Michaelmas 2011.

The site is a series of modules on top of Drupal, the excellent web framework written in PHP.  It was chosen to maximise the site's life by remaining secure (we continue to use Drupal 6) without too much intervention as updates are regularly available.

The Website Subcommittee:

  • Ian Jones, CompSci, JCR Website & Computing Officer 2010: first version of laundry slot booking
  • Tom Nickson, Engineering, Mr D&M 2010: site design, content editing capabilities, content organisation, image gallery
  • Ben Spencer, CompSci, JCR Website & Computing Officer 2010: calendar, hall menus, room database, democracy frontend
  • Sean Whitton, Math/Phil, JCR Secretary 2010, Affiliations Officer 2011: project co-ordination, server administration, laundry slot booking, democracy backend, badgering.

The site is hosted by SilentFlame, a volunteer-run web hosting company which donates all its profits to charity.
