The Lindsay Bar is located in the heart of Balliol
College's main Broad Street site. A unique, historic throwback
to a bygone age when all Oxford college bars were owned and
operated by students, the Lindsay is run by annually elected
members of Balliol JCR. We think this works. At a time when
many colleges are threatening the closure of their bars through
lack of use, we are proud to be thriving.
Most other college bars started life as wine cellars, but
the Lindsay Bar once formed part of a set of chemistry laboratories
shared between Balliol and Trinity. These days it's a much
more welcoming place. Because of their interest in the operation,
Balliol students have always contributed to the atmosphere
themselves as much as they can. Many say that the Lindsay
Bar is worth a visit just to see the unique murals painted
by undergraduates.
Although you'd be quite right to expect cheap beer from us,
we offer a lot more than that. We stock a shockingly well
priced range of premium gins and whiskies, and sell the cheapest
draught Erdinger Hefe-Weizen in Britain. Our Open Mic nights
attract talent from throughout Balliol and beyond. On Tuesdays
of Full Term quite possibly the cheapest shot night in the
country swings by: "Crazy Tuesdays", when a shot
+ mixer costs 75p. Fridays are usually Cocktail Nights, to
which one should turn up early. Quiz nights are perhaps inevitable,
but they're generally a fun break from the Oxford norm.
We are also proud to offer safe, fun employment to Balliol
students (anyone interested in training should contact Duckworth),
who are our only evening staff. When the latest round of licensing
reform happened in 2005, we had to become a private members'
bar to continue operating as we always have. But since we
are staffed solely by JCR members, if you don't cause trouble
we will gladly welcome you as our guests.
