Balliol College is adamant that, once here, you will not
have to leave due to your financial circumstances.
There is a lot of financial aid available to those who need
it, ranging from Oxford Bursaries, available to those on full
fee remission; Junior Maintenance Grants, which everyone apart
from 1st Years can apply for, and are to help towards the
cost of living in Oxford; to short term loans to help you
out of tight spots.
For more concise information, check out the “Money Matters”
handbook, available online at www.balliol.ox.ac.uk/sites/default/files/moneymatters.pdf
The Financial Aid Officer Doug is not only
armed with plenty of information and advice about available
grants, debt management and budgeting, but is also the person
who decides how money is allocated. He is willing to assist
with financial difficulties and the drudgery of the filling
in of Student Loan application forms etc; he will also be
willing to offer advice on how to control your finances and
budget if you are having difficulty. He is available in staircase
21 room 8 Monday - Friday (except Thursday, 12 noon -1.00
pm). If you are in any difficulties then please do not hesitate
to go and talk to him; he will do his best to help you. If
possible, email him first to find a mutually convenient time.
It is often handy to go with an outline of your income and
expenditure, so he can see how College could best help you,
i.e. whether it be through a grant or a loan. Doug can only
administer discretionary loans of up to £300; anything
above that he deals with in consultation with the Student Finance
Committee, though in emergencies he can clear it with
them after the event. All information is kept confidential.
