Mental Health

Many people experience mental health problems at university, and at Balliol we do our best to ensure that there are lots of people who can help you if you are struggling. We believe it's important to look after our mental health at all levels – so please never think that any concern is too small or too big. Whether you just haven’t been feeling quite yourself or you have a serious mental illness – you should never feel that you have to cope with it on your own.

The best thing to do if you are finding things hard is to talk to someone. It might feel difficult to take that step, but it is so much easier to deal with something if you don’t have to do it alone. Good people to talk to include:

Worried about a friend?

If you think a friend might be suffering from a mental illness, the most important thing is to make sure they know you are there for them. You may feel a bit helpless but it can be hugely comforting for your friend to know that they can share their feelings with you. You need to make sure you are looking after yourself too – don’t feel that you need to shoulder the burden of friend’s worries alone. You can always talk to any of the above people without ever having to break your friend’s confidentiality.
